Inland Empire Heatwave Triggers Spike in Overheated Ford Explorers and Police Interceptors at Ontario Shops

Ontario, CA — When the Inland Empire turns into an oven, the tow trucks line up — and the vehicles on the end of the cable are overwhelmingly Fords.

During the latest triple-digit heatwave, Ontario repair shops report a sharp spike in overheated Ford Explorers, Crown Victorias, and Police Interceptor Utilities rolling in with steam billowing from under the hood. Mechanics say most of it is preventable, and almost all of it traces back to one system: the cooling system.

"Heatwaves don't break good cooling systems — they expose bad ones," a Mission Boulevard technician said. "If your radiator is marginal, your fan relay is weak, or your coolant is old, a 112-degree day is when you find out."

Why Fords Overheat in the Heat

Ford's Explorer platform and the Crown Victoria share a common weakness under extreme heat: they were built for a wide range of duty, and when the cooling system is neglected, high ambient temperatures push it past its limit.

Common heatwave culprits:

• Weak or failed cooling fans. Electric fan relays and fan motors take a beating in patrol and fleet use. A fan that won't spin at idle means no airflow when you're stuck in traffic.
• Old coolant. Coolant loses its corrosion inhibitors over time. Old coolant eats radiator fins from the inside, and a radiator that can't shed heat will boil over on a hot day.
• Thermostat stuck closed. A thermostat that won't open turns the engine into a kettle. Code P0128 is the early warning.
• Radiators with cracked plastic end tanks. Heat cycles crack the plastic tanks over years. A cold pressure test catches these before they let go on the 10 freeway.
• Internal water-pump failure (3.7L / 3.5L EcoBoost). The most serious one. When the pump weeps or fails internally, coolant level drops and the engine overheats — fast.

The Warning Signs Before the Steam

Most overheating Fords telegraph the problem before they boil over:

• The temperature gauge creeping above the middle
• Coolant smell after a drive
• The A/C blowing warm while stopped, then cold again once moving
• Coolant level dropping with no visible leak
• Cooling fans running at full speed all the time

If you see any of these in hot weather, don't wait. An engine that overheats once can warp a cylinder head or blow a head gasket — and that turns a cooling service into an engine replacement.

The Heatwave Checklist

Before the next hot spell hits the Inland Empire:

• Check your coolant level and condition. If it's rusty, brown, or more than three years old, it's due.
• Listen for your fans. They should cycle on when the A/C is running. Silence is a warning.
• Watch the temperature gauge. Above center is not normal, even in summer.
• Pressure-test the system. A cold pressure test finds leaks before they leave you stranded.
• If you own a 3.7L or 3.5L EcoBoost, check the oil. Milky oil or a rising oil level means coolant is getting in — stop driving and get it towed.
