Modern Police Interceptor: Sedan vs Utility

Two Interceptors, One Badge

When Ford replaced the Crown Victoria, they split the fleet into two platforms built off the Taurus and Explorer. Both wear the Police Interceptor name, and both are serious machines — but they're very different animals under the skin.

Police Interceptor Sedan (Taurus-Based)

  • Standard: 3.7L Cyclone V6, tough and torquey.
  • Optional: 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo — fast, but heat-management is everything.
  • Watch for: Water pump weepage, PTU failure, and turbo oil supply lines.

Police Interceptor Utility (Explorer-Based)

  • Standard: 3.7L V6, the workhorse of most fleets.
  • Optional: 3.0L EcoBoost (newer) — strong performer, demands clean oil.
  • Watch for: PTU fluid, rear differential, and the cooling fan relay under heavy idle.

What They Share

Both are unibody, both are AWD-biased, and both punish neglected fluid. The single biggest thing you can do for either is stay ahead of the maintenance schedule. The PTU (power transfer unit) isn't optional equipment — it's a wear item, and it's cheaper to service than to replace.

We service both platforms daily. If your Interceptor is due for PTU fluid, a transmission service, or a diagnostic on a weird idle, book it in.
